Run (or walk) in the Footsteps of a Champion!

Join us for "An Evening with Champions (adobe .pdf, 726 kbs) " to raise funds for the Concern Haiti Appeal.

This coming May 16th 2010, why not take the opportunity to run in the footsteps of former World Champion and Olympic Silver medallist John Treacy. 2009 saw the 30th anniversary of John’s famous IAAF World Cross Country Championship victory in Limerick in 1979 becoming one of a handful of athletes to actually retain the title which he had claimed the previous year in the mud of Glasgow. It was also the 25th anniversary of that famous silver medal winning performance in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. A four time Olympian, who at one time held the Irish record for 3000m, 5000m, 10000m and the marathon, John won numerous races on the athletics calendar, including the Los Angeles Marathon, Dublin City Marathon, Great North Run, Gasparilla 15K Road Race and was a member of the Irish Team that won two Ekiden relays.

John’s legendary athletic achievements have rightly placed him in the pantheon of Irish sporting greats and in 2010 Waterford County Council, Waterford Sports Partnership and West Waterford Athletics Club along with John’s local community will pay tribute to one of Waterford’s sporting icons by organising the second John Treacy Classic in his home village of Villierstown, Co. Waterford in his honour.

• 5k Fun Run/Walk- €5 (over 16’s); €3 (under 16’s) U 12’s must be accompanied by an adult-12 p.m.
• 1k Fun Run/Walk-Free Entry on the day-11:45 a.m.

This event is not only for elite athletes in fact the organizers would like to encourage as many ‘non-elite’ runners as possible. If you are not quite up to the 10 mile challenge yet why not set yourself a target of getting into shape for walking or running the 5k or 1k events. This will surely be a great occasion for all of the family and it will also give you the chance to raise funds for John’s nominated charity ‘Concern’ Worldwide-Haiti Appeal.
