John Treacy 10 Mile ClassicThe 10 Mile event will be familiar distance for those used to competing in such events as the Ballycotton 10 and the Quantum Life Dungarvan 10. However even for those who have yet to run over the classic distance with a good solid training regime including some long runs this route should be no problem. As usual if this is your first time taking part in this type of activity or if it has been a number of years since you were active then the organisers would recommend a visit to your GP just to get sound medical advice before embarking on a training schedule. The start is in the village of Villierstown close to the National School. The first mile is slightly undulating and you will be heading eastwards for a distance of 2 miles before turning left at Keereen Cross Roads and following the R671 towards Dungarvan Aluminium and again another left turn just after the 3 mile mark (all the while descending slightly). Miles 3 to 6 take the runners through the lush green fields of West Waterford over some typically ‘up and down’ type terrain. Just after the 10k mark runners will go over the wonderful Dromana Bridge with its distinctive gate entrance. From miles 7 to 9 runners will be delighted by the very scenic Dromana Drive. There is an ascent to contend with at this part of the course so you may not have time to admire the scenery. The last mile is the fastest mile of the day when runners will do a ‘lap of honour’ of the picturesque village of Villierstown. This will take runners past the village green, very close to the beautiful Villierstown Quay and the loop will finish by turning left onto the final 80 metre straight in the heart of the village.
